The word “perfect” has been coming up a lot recently. There’s an end of class meditation I use called “Let Go of Perfection”. It is a reminder that we are the perfect parent for our children. No matter what we’re trying to do or be, our children look up to us, admire us, and believe we are perfect. Which leaves me to ask, what is “perfect”?
Fast forward and I was reading a bedtime story to my kids called The Good Egg. The point of the story was that the egg put so much pressure on himself to be good and perfect that he started to crack. He needed to leave and take care of himself before he could return to his friends. Ultimately he realizes he can try to be perfect, but it’s ok to mess up sometimes and we’re better when we take care of ourselves without putting so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect.
It is also February, the month of celebrating love. A love song that comes to mind is “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. We get surrounded by the word perfect all the time. As mothers, we are constantly expected to be perfect. We need to be everything to everyone all the time and do it with patience, grace and a smile on our face. But what is perfect? Should we be striving for perfection? Is perfection like beauty, in the eye of the beholder?
There is no real answer to any of those questions. The best answer is the one from The Good Egg. We can only be the best version of ourselves, the “perfect” version for our families, when we take care of ourselves. Thankfully we are part of this beautiful community who helps and supports us.
