Meet Megan Colwell our Mom of the Month!
Megan was nominated for many reasons. She is a HUGE inspiration to all of us at FIT4MOM Glen Ellyn / Wheaton / Lombard. She attends a minimum of 3 classes per week. She was our "biggest winner" in Body Back last fall and lost over 16 lbs in the session! She has continued the Body Back program to lose over 30 pounds! She is a kind, gentle, caring mom to Henry and Hudson. If you haven't had a chance to meet Megan yet, you will soon! She plans awesome playgroups for us in Glen Ellyn too!
Hometown: Des Moines, IA
Family: My Mom and Dad still live in Iowa. I have three older sisters and 8 nieces and nephews that also live in Iowa. My husband has a younger brother and a younger sister. His brother lives in North Carolina and his sister is a freshman at the University of Iowa (my alma mater)
Current/Previous Career: Currently I am a Stay at Home Mom to Henry (2) and Hudson (10 months). Before I decided to stay home with my boys I worked in Premium Financing for a company called Imperial Premium Finance. I worked there for 7 years as the Assistant Branch Manager and National Accounts Manager. When Henry was born, they worked out a part time consulting position for me so I could work from home and be with my baby. I did that until Hudson was born and I decided to leave “work” and be a full time Stay at Home Mom.
Childhood Ambition: When I was little I wanted to be a “Rodeo Queen” I would practice for hours riding around carrying a flag. As I got a little older and it became obvious that Rodeo Queen was not in the cards, I just wanted to be successful and happy in what I chose. I love math and the logic behind numbers so I chose a career in finance.
Motherhood means to me... a never ending source of happiness and joy combined with an overwhelming amount of chaos. It is the absolute hardest thing I have ever done. There is NO logic to being a mom and so it falls outside my realm of understanding. There are days where it is crazy, chaotic, and monotonous all at the same time, but at the end of the day when Henry and I are snuggling and reading a story or when Hudson smiles and reaches out for me and then snuggles into my arms, everything makes sense and I have an amazing sense of fulfillment.
Furthest I have been from home: I have traveled to Ireland, Amsterdam, Spain, and Morocco. The furthest I have been is probably Morocco. We crossed the Strait of Gibraltar on a ferry, and it was the worst boat ride of my life!
How did you hear about FIT4MOM: I originally found Fit4Mom when I was pregnant with Henry. My best friend did Stroller Strides and told me about Fit4Baby. I signed up for the first session when I was about 16 weeks pregnant and I continued doing the workouts until the day before Henry was born. The day before Henry was born I did a Fit4Baby workout. I took a 3 month maternity leave before going back to work. I signed up for Stroller Strides to get us out of the house and to help get me back in my work clothes.
How has FIT4MOM changed your life: Fit4Mom has changed my life in SO many ways. The community of moms has given me the only outlet I have to feel normal. Being a mom is so hard and there are so many opinions on how you should raise your children. It is so nice to go Stroller Strides and be able to talk to other moms who understand how hard it is to make the right decisions for your family. My Body Back experience was life changing. I’ve lost almost 30 lbs following the Body Back program, but the weight loss was just one factor. Body Back taught me that it’s okay to NEED time away from your children and that the time you take to focus on you is still benefiting them. With 2 little ones it is very hard to find time to myself, but I have learned where to find those moments and they have made me a much better mom.
Favorite Exercise: I love running. I’m not very good at it, but I love the escape I get when I lose myself in the music and the rhythm of the run. I also really love squats. I love the burn!
Proudest moment: I hate to base pride on what the scale says, but when I finally weighed in at less than I weighed before I was pregnant with Henry, that was a huge moment for me. For the first time in 3 years, I will be comfortable wearing a 2 piece bathing suit this year.
Something that would surprise you about me: I am freakishly good at Xcel. I love it. I love the strategy behind it. If I could put everything in a spreadsheet. I would. :)
